In Croatia, approximately 40,000 citizens turn to a loan-shark from one of the 50 offices owned by the Slovenian citizens Alek Gradišnik, Danijel Kociper and Marko Romanič. In Slovenia, they have been under investigation for years for fraud, money laundering and loan-sharking.
These estimates are from an employee of the Zagreb branch of this organization (his description). Aside from an office in the center of Zagreb, they also opened offices in Rijeka, Karlovac, Varaždin and Velika Gorica. In order to get a small loan, you needed to leave checks as a security deposit. If you are only two days late with repayment, you would have to pay back the entire amount immediately, increased by 100%. If you could not repay it, you would be warned that the bankers will inform all of your friends and family of your debts and then you would be given an opportunity to take another loan. If you would need a larger loan, you would have to secure it with a real estate mortgage.
