The Paris-based IEA, while calling for more supply, says less crude will be needed from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries later this year as production revives elsewhere. OPEC pumped 32.3 million barrels of crude a day in May, according to the IEA. The agency’s projections show that, to balance world supply and demand, OPEC will need to produce only 31.4 million in the third quarter, and 31.3 million in the fourth.
“The Saudis are having to deal with several contradicting signals,” said Paul Horsnell, head of commodities research at Barclays Capital Inc. in London. “The IEA sees a huge swing up from non-OPEC, so they think there is no need for more OPEC oil. At the same time, the head of the IEA is asking for more oil.”
