The new Minister of Administration, Mr. Davorin Mlakara, is in for difficult decisions. After the suggestion to cut pays to state employees and privileged pensions, the Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor demanded to get a law proposal to reduce salaries of city mayors, municipality mayors and their associates.

Previously, this was never a subject of discussion and many, including some coalition partners such as the Mayor of Varaždin, Ivan Čehok, question the Prime Minister’s proposal.“This proposal went into procedure twice previously and failed both times, due to it being in contradiction to the European charter regulating local administrations that didn’t allow the central government to impose pays to the local level. The Government can once again make this proposal, but will once gain be faced with this Chapter,” emphasized Čehok. On the other hand, Zvonimir Mršić, Mayor of Koprivnica, claims that the Government has failed to regulate this area for years, even though they are obliged to propose criteria defining pays for municipality mayors, mayors, and County prefects. Čehok has announced that they will reduce his and the City of Varaždin’s officials by 10%.
